At times in life, for some people relationship struggles, work or financial stress, life events or indeed past traumas can become too much of a burden. We may feel overwhelmed by thoughts and feelings. We may feel alone and struggling to cope. Talking to a friend or family member can be a great comfort but for some personal struggles, we may need someone with more skill to talk to. This is where seeing a counsellor or psychotherapist can help.
In a therapeutic session, the counsellor/psychotherapist creates a safe space and supports you to talk freely about the challenges bringing distress into your life. For many people, over time, this can help them have more clarity and support them bringing about change for a healthier life outcome for themselves. Therapeutic sessions are one to one, private and confidential.
A good counsellor is someone you can feel comfortable with. They are somebody who establishes a caring and non-judgemental environment where you can take time for you. You should feel listened to and respected. There are many different counsellors and psychotherapists available and many different therapeutic approaches. However not every counsellor or therapist may be the right fit for you. Therefore when you make the initial contact with a counsellor/psychotherapist, ask questions and see how you feel about engaging with that counsellor/psychotherapist. How you connect with the counsellor/psychotherapist is important for you to establish a positive working relationship.
